Comment below and let me know your thoughts on that. If there is enough interest/demand for it, I may consider perpetually updating this list and keeping it as an up-to-date reference rather than just a one-time article. And, where applicable, how the final versions of those games ended up being received critically. I’ve decided to compile a list of all of the notable spiritual successors, official sequels, and remakes/remasters that have ever been crowdfunded just as a way to have them all in one big, easily-referable place. But when a game like Pillars of Eternity is a creative success, the pendulum swings back toward “See, this is why Kickstarter needs to exist.” As far as when games don’t even get funded, or do but end up getting cancelled, well that sparks a whole different discussion entirely. 9, a lot of people are quick to jump on the “See, Kickstarter doesn’t pay off” bandwagon. You play as detectives for half the game. With less-than-stellar review scores coming in for Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. There's a ton of other great, non-Wadjet Eye detective adventure games for the PC: Kathy Rain, the Tex Murphy-ish FMV game Contradiction, the Still Life series.Īnother game already mentioned but I'll repeat it because it's one of my all-time favorite games: Fahrenheit, which is kind of a combination of adventure, crime/mystery, interactive fiction, action, rhythm game(!), and existential crisis. Resonance and Gemini Rue are about solving mysteries and are solid adventure games. The main characters in the Blackwell series have the same fun dynamic that Nico and George have in the Broken Sword games. If you liked the Broken Sword series, check out some of the stuff by/published by Wadjet Eye. The rest of the Frogware Sherlock games are okay to great - I couldn't finish Awakened due to a bug and I ended up refunding Crimes & Punishment because it seemed too simplistic compared to the past titles, but there's a lot of good detective fun in the series. Whatever you do, stay far away from The Mystery of the Persian Carpet, which has really badly-designed hidden object scenes and mix-and-match puzzles in place of actual detective puzzles. Jack the Ripper and Testament of Sherlock Holmes are my favorites. Like someone else already mentioned, the Sherlock Holmes series by Frogwares! It is a bit pricey though, for what it is, but it's a pretty lengthy read and has a sequel that came out either last year or this year. The bonus of it being an 18+ (or Adults only in the US) is they don't faff about dressing things up and making the murders suitable for PG audiences. If you're 18+ and you're comfortable with sex and gore, you might be interested in the visual novel: Kara no Shoujo, where you do play as a post-war detective investigating a serial killing. Murdered: Soul Suspect is another one, which someone else has mentioned. Think the bundle also includes Crimes and Punishment and Testament of Sherlock Holmes, plus one other really crap puzzle game, so it's not bad value. Jack the ripper is really detailed, they did their research for it. Gets better though with The Awakened (Cthulu cult), Nemesis (England Vs France detective vs dashing thief game of cat and mouse,) and Jack the Ripper (you know this one) all being quite good. Second is probably the best to start with (Secret of the Silver Earring), and even that's pretty rough. Usually gets bundled in the winter sale for a decent price.
